Thanks again.especially for your quick response.paul It's just too much money.ĭo you know anyone trustworthy within 200 miles of DC? I would bring it to them in a heartbeat if they would do it while i wait. Now, although they are so high, the shop I spoke to is meticulous and i believe they can do it properly. I also want the steering box checked and brought to spec, but they told me that is separate and would raise it over $1000. but what else is there? It's just is a stock rebuild but with German parts. Yes, I want new king and link pins, plus new seals and also existing torsion bars removed and checked. I have done just king and linkpins parts included for 400 dollars. You just want king and links and beam seals? Steering box would be extra.ġ000 is a lot. I would like to have all parts (king pins, link pins, seals, all rubber, etc.) replaced with German made parts in the front beam on my 1958 bug.Ĭan you suggest what a fair price for this work is? I am being quoted around $1000 +/-). Now I have to make a new bearing lockwasher. Boy, do these feel nice- once they cooled,, maybe a 5-pound pull to twist the steering knuckles, per the Bentley, nice and smooth. I put the spindles in a boiling pot of water with a touch of oil for flavor for about a half-hour, and the new kingpins went in wa-a-a-y easier than they came out. Last edited by &Dan on Sat 6:01 pm edited 1 time in totalĮverything's back together. In this case I had more time than money so it worked out fine, but otherwise.well, you get the picture. The kingpin fits right.īut it was NOT easy, so my advice is take Metalchomper's and '58Dub's advice and go with the Chadwick unit if you can swing it. We machined two pilots, one to fit an unreamed bore, the other fit the reamed bore, with a piece of drill rod aligning the tool and pilot, and made multiple incremental passes and were able to get a straight shot on each torsion arm link. Well, armed with a lousy-quality reamer- Metalchomper, you were right about this reamer, the blades like to sit at different heights relative to the tool and one must measure carefully each blade, a real piece of crap- we finally got the job done properly. Posted: Fri 8:12 pm Post subject: Boy, that wasn't so easy, was it? See what kind of return poilcy they have. without them you have no way of ensuring that the reamer is running true on the axis of the king pin. I've actually tried this very same reamer and it was pure crap.ĭitto on the "pilots". You will not get the bushings in proper alignment. getting the spindles apart, installing new bushings and all was a breeze compared to finding a damn machine shop with the proper reamer. It would be cheaper for you to ship them to me and have my shop press them out, me press them in and get them reamed and ship them back I don't see why reaming the bushings would cost much considering it shouldn't take em more than 20 mins to do both! It doesn't look that hard after watching the kcw video. I'm going to press the bushings in myself. lol Another place only did commercial machine work and another place said they didn't know if they could do it.I'd have to drop the spindles off and let their machinist look em over. I've been calling around to the local machine shops and also a couple places that I know that work on bugs and I can't seem to find anyone to press and ream the bushings for a reasonable price. I'd prefer to have a shop do the reaming but out here in the sticks it's not an option. Thanks for all the information, guys, I really appreciate it. I don't remember the PN so do a search and you'll find it. Might want to look into that unless you plan on doing a lot of Spindle installs later on. I went to my local VW shop and he had an OG VW reamer and did my set for $15. The good ones are usually very expensive. Can't seem to find one anywhere- any guesses or advice? I understand through searching the topic one needs a VW 224 or equivalent reamer to ream new kingpin bushings prior to pressing in the new kingpin.
